Marketing Rules from Jake and Elwood – The Blues Brothers
The Blues Brothers was a cult hit movie from the last century. I find that inspiration for marketing can come from many different sources – and old movies and music is a great place to start. Our preferred source of entertainment is now on video sites like Youtube.
There may be a structural change in the world right there. No longer do we ‘put on a CD’, but simply connect to the web -and expect places like youtube.com to have a video clip for most any music group we can think of.
After some aimless clicking we ended listening to the great music from the Blues Brothers – and some marketing rules were born.
Marketing rules from the Blues? Yep. Watch the video clip and you will see what many businesses see on a daily basis – a lack of interest in their current product. What do Jake, Elwood and band do? They think – I wonder what this audience actually wants to hear. Then they test. [link:Blue Brothers]
I will let you just watch the video now – and enjoy the retro strains of Hollywood doing what it does best. May as well turn it up.
Marketing can be simple. Once you have a chosen audience – determine what they want. The people in the your crowd have common interests – are you feeding that drive?
“Who” is the first question of good marketing. Why they are in your target audience is often the key to finding your message. In this case – one common interest is “country music” – it is not “Chicago Blues”. Having a clear picture of “who” your market is allows you to determine, what they want, why they want it, and how you can best deliver it to them.
Marketing does not always need to be bland and boring. Look for your marketing ideas in places other than texts and newspapers. Look in the movies, the music – and find some emotion that will shine in message. Same is lame.
