A Short Primer To Movie Script Writing

Hollywood agents and studios are usually on the lookout for the Next Big Thing when it comes to screenplays and every year they’re bombarded with unsolicited manuscripts that never ever view the light of day, much less a single dollar of production funds. Studios, production companies as well as talent firms all hire young people straight out of college or having little industry experience with careers they call “Readers”. All these Readers go through the giant piles of solicited material each day and try to select the gems in the stack. A needle within a haystack is an appropriate metaphor for these submissions. They write a review of the script which is referred to as “coverage” and then either put “recommend” or “pass” on it.

The difference between an unrequested and solicited manuscript means the main difference between being read and being thrown into the trash can. In case you only send out your script to an address (unwanted) without having been exclusively requested to do so by an individual at that company (solicited) then you’re wasting your precious time, ink, as well as paper. It’s certainly a sort of Catch-22 and nothing will place the brakes on your film script writing career quicker than mailing unsolicited scripts to studios. Agents are different story and you may, if you’re really lucky, get yours read and forwarded to the agent who will then possibly plan to represent you, the fledgling writer.

A different way to get your film script writing in front of the ideal people is to participate in one of the many screenwriting contests that are in existence and actually winning one or becoming in the top five. The catch is that a lot of these competitions are usually scams and are simply there to collect the entry fee from hapless schmucks like you. Even the reputable competitions such as Scriptapalooza have got really high entry fees which could be too high to the rookie screenwriter having very little or zero money.

The best and most positive way to get your screenplay spotted and into the proper hands is if you know a person in the business. Now that somebody doesn’t need to be Steven Spielberg or Quentin Tarantino (although it helps) but it does have to be somebody with connections or a regular career within one of the studios or production houses. If you do have an acquaintance like this, do not just approach them having a script in hand. Verify first exactly what film script writing they are looking for. When they want a romantic comedy for goodness sake never give them a supernatural horror script. You wouldn’t believe how often this occurs.

Additionally, the number 1 most significant suggestion is to learn the art of movie script writing thoroughly before you try and get one produced. Many experts recognize that you need to write several (more than two) scripts before even planning to pass one to the studios. Even though they receive a lot of material, Hollywood is still a small town and people recall a dud.
